چکیده
Introduction. This review was written from the perspective of someone working in the field of Machine Learning of Natural Language: the application of techniques from statistical pattern recognition and Machine Learning to problems in Natural Language Processing (NLP). As in any subfield of Artificial Intelligence, the goals of this type of research can be either practical or theoretical. From the point of view of practice (language engineering), Machine Learning methods have been shown to allow the construction of more efficient, more robust, and more accurate NLP systems in a faster way than by handcrafting rules. The explanation for this is that these inductive systems are trained on large corpora of real language use, rather than being based on linguistic intuitions of one or a few (computational) linguists. On the other hand, the induced theories lack the linguistic sophistication of hand-made models. Theoretical results include an increased understanding which linguistic knowledge can be learned from primary linguistic data, which sources of knowledge are necessary for learning a particular NLP task, what distribution of effort and importance should be assigned to programmed knowledge and induced knowledge, and which learning algorithm has the right ‘bias’ to learn linguistic knowledge.

Widdowson and Classroom Discourse
Drawing on recent developments in linguistic description and applied linguistics, it can be concluded that learning a language necessitates getting to know something and being able to do something with that knowledge: competence, and performance. Structural approach to language description attaches importance to the former; communicative approach to the latter. Appropriate classroom discours...
متن کاملThe effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction: Implications for online learning
This study investigated the effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction in two online debates. Knowledge construction was assessed using Gunawardena et al.’s Interaction Analysis Model (1997). Language complexity was determined by dividing the number of unique words by total words. It refers to the lexical variation. The results showed that...

Language learning strategies, “the techniques or devices which a learner may use to acquire knowledge” (Rubin, 1975, p. 43) or more pertinently “complex, dynamic thoughts and actions, selected and used by learners with some degree of consciousness in specific contexts” (Oxford, 2017, p. 48), have been widely researched and discussed for more than forty years since the mid-1970s. Shifting the fo...
